Upper White Coat Ghetto - For the University of Rochester Medical, Nursing and Graduate student related to the University of Rochester Medical Center and the Strong Memorial Hospital there is one clear top choice for living - The Upper White Coat Ghetto. This small residential area is very close to the U of R Medical Center and Strong Memorial Hospital - walking distance within 2-4 minutes and is totally safe. The housing options here are plenty and the rents are affordable.
Other areas - There are other areas around the University and the Medical Center, but none has the proximity and few have the safety of the Upper White Coat Ghetto.
Four streets -The Upper White Coat Ghetto basically consists of four tree lined small neighborhood streets.
Crittenden Boulevard - Crittenden Boulevard which is closest to the hospital and both the hospital and the nursing schools are actually located on Crittenden Boulevard. The University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Memorial Hospital across the street from the residential area and the School of Nursing on the same side as the residential area. We have two homes on Crittenden Blvd.
Raleigh Street - Raleigh Street is the next street down and is a smaller residential street with less traffic and more privacy - although you will still hear the emergency helicopter coming and going. We have three homes on Raleigh Street.
Irvington Road - Our next three homes are on Irvington Road which is the third street down from the Medical Center. Irvington Road is considered the most prestigious street in the Upper White Coat Neighborhood. The houses are a little larger; the street is wider and has the appearance of the tree lined French-Parisian Boulevards.
Rossiter - In between is Rossiter Road. We have one very noce home on 141 Rossiter Road.
Castleman Road - Between White coat Neighborhood and the School of Nursing is Castleman Road. We have one contemporary very nice home on 226 Castleman Road.
Park Avenue is about 10 to 12 minutes drive from the Medical Center and if you live there you will have to pay for parking at the Medical Center and you will share the struggle for a good spot with many others.
Rent is significantly higher in the Park Avenue area than in the White Coat Neigborhood area although the quality of the housing usually cannot match. Safty wise Park Avenue is city living.
19th ward - Other students elect to live in the 19th ward which is across the Genesee River from the University. Again this is more undergrads than graduate students. 19th ward is walking distance to the University River campus and with a strech you can also walk to the Medical Center. To improve the safety on the other side of the river the University has installed many blue security lamps, surveillance cameras and security telephones.
South Wedge - Some students live in the South Wedge area which as recently as the 1980s, was considered a 'bad' part of town, but active neighborhood groups encouraged its growth and revitalization. New businesses are opening up, a street life is developing and it's become one of the hottest areas in the city to live, work and play. It is a vibrant, clean, and relatively safe area of Rochester to live. The majority of homeowners take pride in the area, and it has an ever increasing number of interesting shops and bars. You will have a 10 minute drive to the Medical Center from South Wedge.
White Coat Neighborhood - Overall the Upper Whtie Coat Neighbiorhood is the ideal location for University of Rochester students related to the Medical Center who are looking for a safe, friendly and close by neighborhood.
